Houston rapper Kirko Bangz continues to showcase his artistic evolution via the release of his Progression 3 mixtape.
Preceded by 2009′s Progression and 2012′s Progression 2: A Young Texas Playa, this latest chapter features 14 new tracks that bounce around from the hazy, bedroom-geared opener “Awwready” and AutoTuned, AC-geared ballad rap like “Old Ways” to more traditional bangers like “Vent 2″ and the G-funk-flirting “Neva Changed.”
Kirko attempts to duplicate the success with ‘Progression 3,’ but it’s hard to pick out a song that has a chance of doing so. The 23-year-old spits in double time and sings and croons through the 14 tracks. Sadly, it’s clear Kirko Bangz is barely the jack of a lot trades, and the master of none as he inadvertently exposes his own weaknesses.
On ‘Vent 2,’ he puts his cold-hearted lover persona aside to reflect on more hard-nosed struggles. “Rest in peace Lil Snupe,” he begins, referencing Meek Mill’s murdered Dreamchaser’s signee. “I never met you, I’m affected man that’s f—ed up dude / N—-s out here killing n—-s and n—-s still in school / Scared to go ’cause they can’t go if they can’t carry a tool.”
Guests run amok on the tape, with contributors including Wale, Trinidad Jame$, Nipsey Hussle and more. On “Shirt By Versace,” you get fashionable guest bars from French Montana, YG and G Haze. On the production side of things, beats were brought to the table by DJ Mustard, KE, Sound Mob, Jahlil Betas, Young Chill and more.
